My Books of Binder
My Book of Books Binder is a fun and interactive tool for checking your child’s reading comprehension. Here is how to do it.
Place page protectors in a three ring binder. After reading a story, take out a sheet of paper and label it with the book’s title and author’s name. Ask your child a comprehension question. Then, anywhere on the page, have your child draw a picture to answer the question. If your child wants to, he can dictate to you a simple sentence about the picture. Start with easy questions first and work your way up to the harder ones. Ask as many questions as you can and see how many pictures your child can draw on that page. After you are done, your child will have made a full page with colorful and creative details from the story. Put the finished page in your child’s Book of Books Binder. Your child will love going back through the pages and remembering all the books he’s read. Your child can make a cover page for the binder.
As your child becomes familiar with My Book of Books Binder, you can start asking before, during and after questions. Here are some comprehension questions to get you started.
Before Reading: What is this story going to be about and how do you know? (Label this picture as “My Prediction.”)
During questions:
- “Who is this story about?”
- “What color shirt is she wearing?”
- “What is the setting of the story?” “Is it day or night?” “Where are they?”
- “What does that word mean?”
- “What do you think will happen next?”
- “What is she feeling?” “Is she happy?”
- “What’s the problem in the story?”
- “How can they resolve it?”
After questions:
- “What happened in the beginning, the middle and the end of the story?”
- “What was your favorite part?”
- “Who was your favorite character?”
- “Could this story happen in real life?”
