2009 March 22 | The Preschooler

“The Wide-Eyed Wonder Years: A Mommy’s Guide to Preschool Daze” by Lorilee Craker

From the moment I opened the cover, I was bent over in side-splitting laughter. Anyone who has ever been around a preschooler for more than a few minutes will be able to relate to Lorilee Craker’s candid retelling of embarrassing moments, sibling rivalries, and so much more. This book is definitely written for mothers of preschoolers, but she touches on issues from which anyone who takes care of little ones could benefit. She imparts her knowledge on sharing, monsters in the closet, finicky eaters, choosing your battles, materialism, separation anxiety, and even birthday parties. She also includes chapters on issues which many people skirt around such as over-involved relatives, making time for yourself, and how moms can keep things alive between themselves and their husbands.

This book is a refreshing look at issues which all moms face at some point in their children’s lives. Craker writes from the perspective of someone who has already worked through these situations with an older child and is currently going through some of them with a younger one. There are no theories included; only tried and true advice that has been tested in her own home. She also includes the experiences of other mothers whom she has met along her path.

I whole-heartedly recommend this book to any mother of a preschooler. It is a quick read, and yet loaded with tips, advice, and enough laughter to make you want to read it from cover to cover more than once.
