TV Characters Motivate
Children today are exposed to television everywhere they go. At school, in the doctor’s office waiting room, the airport, the mall, and, of course, at home. Even parents who try to limit the amount of television their children are exposed to would have to admit that their children quickly recognize and identify characters from popular programs and movies. Instead of fretting over the “damaging effects” of the television, why not use it to your advantage as a tool to motivate?
Pictures of favorite characters can be used to fill in a chore chart, a potty chart, or any other type of progress chart you are using. Character coloring pages can be used as a reward for a job well done. You can also find printable puzzles, books and other learning activity sheets online. Children’s programming companies typically provide these resources online free of charge. You can use a search engine by typing in a character’s name or go to a specific site that hosts a particular show or movie (Disney, Nick Jr., PBS, etc.).
You can also use store-bought items as motivators. A pencil with Lightening McQueen or Strawberry Shortcake is certainly more exciting to write with than a plain, yellow number 2. It may be all that is needed to entice your little one to practice writing his or her name. You can find crayons, markers, stationary and, of course, stickers that can all be used to spark some interest.
