Drawing A Line in the Sand

For many preschoolers, sitting down with a pencil and paper to practice writing letters isn’t exactly what they would choose to do on any given day of the week.  However, as parents, we can still help our children practice these skills without crushing their sense of fun.  Often, all it takes is coming up with a spin on the traditional pencil and paper activities to spark their interest.  This can be done simply by using different materials.  Try some of these suggestions at home with your preschooler:

  • Spray shaving cream on a cookie sheet and allow your preschooler to explore the new texture.  Then, help your child use her index finger to draw letters.  You can also add a few drops of food coloring to spice it up.
  • On a hot day, help your child use a paint brush and water to paint letters on the sidewalk, a fence, or patio.  Watch in amazement as the letters slowly disappear!
  • Go on a nature walk and collect sticks, rocks, leaves or other small items.  Use these pieces of nature to make letters.
  • At the beach or in a sandbox, use a stick to draw letters in the sand.  If you are at the beach, make it a game to draw a letter before a wave washes it away.
