Letter Sound Cubes
When children are able to recognize most of the letters of the alphabet, it is a good time to start helping them make the connection between letters and sounds. Try the following activity with your preschooler and make a game out of learning letter sounds.
Cover five large cubes with an uppercase letter of the alphabet written on each side. You will have four extra sides so repeat four of the vowels on the last four sides. (Plastic stacking cubes designed for babies and toddlers work well if you wrap them with construction paper or brown paper bags.) Let your child roll all four cubes and then help him identify the sound that each letter makes. If four cubes is overwhelming, roll them one at a time and name each letter sound after each one is rolled. When your child has mastered the letter sounds, you can also use the cubes to practice naming words that start with each letter. If your child needs a little motivation, keep score with each correctly named sound or word and play until he reaches ten correct answers.
Tip: If you put all of the vowels and the letter “Y” on one cube, you can use these same cubes to make short words when your child is developmentally ready.
