He’s Only Three
When our first child was born, my husband and I were, of course, in love immediately. We took delight in all of the baby things he did. Although there were a few meltdowns, which typically occurred in the middle of the night, for the most part, we enjoyed every moment.
The first year flew by incredibly fast. And, just as others had warned, he was growing up more quickly than we had expected. He was still our little baby, and sometimes we wished he would stay that way forever.
Just before his second birthday, however, things changed dramatically. His little brother was born. Our first child was now a big brother. With a new helpless little child to care for, my husband and I found ourselves projecting much higher expectations onto the “older” sibling. It was difficult to remember at times that he was still a toddler himself. As is the case in any growing family, this was new territory for everyone. We made our fair share of mistakes when it came to expectations, but after a little practice, we began to figure things out.
Our first child will be four in just a few weeks, and it just doesn’t seem that is possible. As he grows, he will take on more responsibilities. But for now, my husband and I will cherish the fact the he’s only three.
