Getting Ready for the Big Day
This Sunday, I will be participating in my first triathlon. I am excited, nervous, fearful, elated, and several other emotions all at the same time. My guess would be that this is because I am venturing into unknown territory. I think it will be fun and look forward to experiencing something new, but doubt sometimes enters my mind when I think about the big day.
Although I cannot remember that far back, I would imagine that children experience many of the same feelings as they try to picture their first day in Kindergarten. Everything is new and even strange. They must get used to a new adult in charge, a different routine, and a variety of other changes. And even though they may be happy and excited about this new adventure, they may sometimes experience some of the fear and doubt as well. However, there are a few things that parents can do to help their child feel safe and secure during this transition.
If your child’s school has an open house or orientation, be sure to attend. Meeting the teacher, seeing the school and classroom, and interacting with other students will help your child get comfortable with the new environment. If possible, try to schedule a play date with at least one other child in the class. This will give your child someone to look for on the first day, and it will give you another parent with whom you can network. Taking pictures of the event may also help your child stay excited about the “Big Day.”
