Who’s Knocking at My Door?
With radios, televisions, iPods, and so many other forms of technology bombarding our sense of hearing, it is important to take the time to help our children focus on what our ears help us do. And since hearing and listening go hand in hand, here is an activity you can do with your child which will help her to listen carefully to what she is hearing.
Begin by gathering a collection of all sorts of animals. These can be figures from a farm set, stuffed animals, plastic figurines, or even paper animals printed from the computer. Next, have your child sit in a chair with her back to the animal collection. You should sit behind the animals. Tell your child that she will have to use her ears to listen carefully in order to guess which animal has arrived at her house.
The games starts by you saying, “Knock, knock” (or by knocking on an object). Your child then replies, “Who’s knocking at my door?”. You answer in your best animal voice. If the cow is knocking, you would say, “Moo, moo,” for example. Your child then gets up and takes the cow from the group and places it near her chair. If she is incorrect, have her go back to the chair and repeat the game with the same animal. The game continues until all of the animals have been collected. Take turns being the person in the chair or print off different animals to mix up the game.
