T, T, Thomas

My four-year-old son is really into trains. Although he isn’t allowed to play TV games very frequently, we do own a Thomas the Tank Engine ® game for a children’s game system. One of the activities on the game requires kids to select the beginning letter for the names of various trains. The narrator sounds out the name by repeating the beginning sound two times before say the name. For example, he would say, “t” “t” “Thomas”, and then ask what letter Thomas’ name starts with. Children must then select which letter is the correct beginning letter. The activity is then repeated with the names of several other trains.

My son has played this game numerous times, and he begun making up his own game for identifying beginning letter sounds. He will name a word, such as “dog”, and say, “d, d, dog starts with D”. Whenever he does this, I extend the activity by asking him name some other words that start with the letter “D”. If he is having trouble, I may repeat the letter sound several times for him or even give him an example. Sometimes, I will ask does which words do NOT start with “D”. “Does “duck” start with “D”? “Does “car” start with “D”? If the answer is, “No”, he will try to identify the letter that the word does start with.

Although my son often initiates this game, I have also found it to be a great game to play in the car, in the waiting room, or any other time when we have a few minutes to kill. Some days we play for ten or fifteen minutes and other days his attention only lasts through one or two letter rounds. No matter how long the activity lasts, he is gaining wonderful experience in identifying the letter sounds.
