Listen to the Music
At times you may feel as though your child isn’t listening to a word you are saying. It is though you are talking to a wall. You know that she can hear you, but it seems like your words are bouncing back instead of being absorbed. Some people may call this selective listening. Luckily, there are many things you can do to help your child actively listen.
One easy activity you can do on a regular basis is to use action songs. These are songs which give directions that require your child to move in a certain way. For example, they may be directed to reach up to the sky, stomp their feet, or flap like a bird. These songs force your child to listen to what is being said and then move accordingly. They are geared toward young children so the music is generally fun and upbeat. You can buy entire CDs or just look on http://www.songsforteaching.com/movement.htm for a long list of songs which you can listen to online.
Although you may need to initially spark your child’s interest by participating in the songs with her, don’t be surprised if she begins to request that you play them from dawn until dusk. Kids love these silly songs, and you will love seeing how attentively your child is listening.
