Retell Stories with Cans

When children are not yet able to read print, the only way they can tell stories is to either make them up or to try and recall stories that they have had told to them.  To help children do the latter of these two methods, you can use pictures that help them recall characters and events in a story.  One way to do this is through the use of storytelling cans.

To make the cans, start with three aluminum cans that nestle inside one another.  Be sure to sand the inside lip so that they are not sharp.  Use spray paint or solid contact paper to cover the outside of each can.  Attach clip art pictures to the outside of the cans representing the sequence of the story and cover with clear contact paper.  The beginning of the story should be on the outside of the smallest can, and the end of the story should be on the outside of the largest can.

Read the story that goes along with your cans.  Help your child retell the story using the cans.  They can then be used over and over for your child to tell the story to others.  As children grow confident and are ready for a challenge, try making storytelling cans with four or five cans.  (The challenge for you will be finding that many cans that nestle!)
