Phone Book Balance Beam
When it comes to creating imaginative activities for your child, there is no need to go out and buy expensive toys or gadgets. Instead try to utilize items you may already have in your home or that you may be able to get for free from businesses in your area. One example of an activity you can create at home for your little one is a phone book balance beam.
Begin by gathering old or unused telephone books. Ask friends, neighbors, the telephone company, hotels, and other large businesses. (You can always find a large supply when the new books come out each year.) Cover each book in contact paper (or ask a business that supplies wallpaper for their old display books and use the large sheets to wrap the books). Place the books in a line or a circle. It only takes a short time to make. It’s free. And, it sparks interest while safely engaging your child in an activity which helps build balance and muscle control.
Try adding music to the lesson by playing a song while your child walks along the “balance beam”. When you stop the music, your child stops. You can add colored shapes to each book and she can identify which shape and/or color on which she has stopped. The same can be done with numbers, letters, sight words and much more!
