Exaggerated Reading

Have you ever sat and listened to someone who is reading in a monotone voice?  It can be extremely boring, and it is difficult to pay attention to what is being read.  Children react the same way when we adults read in a slow, monotone, or otherwise boring manner.  When you read to a child, you want to grab their attention.  If you read with excitement, they will respond with excitement.  Your exaggerated reading also helps young children learn how they should read when they learn how to decode the text.  They begin to understand that they are not just words on a page, but rather an interesting and captivating story.

The next time you are reading to your child, think what would grab your attention if someone were reading it to you.  Use your voice to express the feelings of the characters.  Use different voices for the characters and add sound words, such as “Crash!”, “Bang!”, or “Boom!”  Make your voice go high and low, loud and quiet.  If your child can see your face, use it to express excitement, fear, or sadness that may be taking place in the story.

When you exaggerate your reading, you will find that your child has more fun listening to the story.  But don’t be surprised that you also have a lot more fun reading them as well!
