Laundry Lessons
As an adult, you probably don’t think of washing clothes as a very intense, thought-provoking activity. For your little one, however, the first step in doing the laundry can be very educational. Separating clothes into piles is a great way to teach your child about sorting, and an extra step in the process (and a little bit more time, of course) can turn your preschooler into a professional laundry helper.
Begin by placing pieces of colored construction paper on the floor to represent each pile of laundry (or simply start a pile by placing one item of clothing on the floor for each color pile). The first few times you will have to help your child with each item, but soon your child will understand how to place each piece of clothing into the correct piles according to colors. Name the piles as you would normally, including darks, whites, bright colors, etc. When you and your child are finished sorting, be sure to go through each pile and discuss any items about which your child isn’t sure. (You may also want to double check for those pesky red socks in the whites pile!) If your child is excited about the process, allow him to help put in the soap, load the washer, transfer clothes to the dryer, and even fold and put away the clothes. Although the process may take a bit longer when your preschooler is helping, the long-term benefits for both of you are worth the extra time now.
