Letters on the Go

As parents of young children, we have all been on car rides that we wish would end sooner than they are expected to last.  This is the perfect game to play in the car when your preschooler is getting bored.  The best part is that your child will be learning beginning letter sounds while happily going from one place to another.

Take along a cookie tray and a set of magnetic letters.  Put one of each letter on the cookie tray so that the letters are all mixed up.  As you drive down the road, have your child pick a letter.  She should locate it on the cookie tray, and then, together, you look around you at passing objects and identify things that start with that letter.  For example, if your child selects the letter “c”, you might see a “cow” or “corn”.

You can also play this game in reverse.  Tell your child to name something she sees outside of the car.  She then finds the beginning letter of that word on her cookie tray.

The game, of course, can be played without the magnetic letters and cookie tray, but her interest may stick with the activity a bit longer if she is physically moving around the letters.
