Fall Tactile Cards

Fall is a great time to take a walk and pick up seeds, leaves, sticks, and other assorted objects which nature has been depositing on the ground.  The next time you have a bright, sunny day and are looking for something to do outside, take a walk with your little one and enjoy the scenery while engaging in a learning activity.

Take along a small bag to collect items your child finds on the ground.  Encourage your child to fill the bag with handfuls of seeds, leaves and anything else that can be glued or taped to paper.  Once at home, have your child sort the objects and break out the craft glue, construction paper and black marker.  Cut sheets of paper in half and write one letter on each piece of paper.  Have your child help determine the letters to be written by identifying the beginning letter sound that coordinates with each pile of nature objects.  For example, you may need an “s” for “sticks”, an “l” for “leaves”, or an “g” for “grass”.

Once you have helped your child glue or tape the objects onto the paper to form the letters, allow them to dry, and then show your child how to trace the letters with her fingers.  Encourage your child to form the letter in the same manner in which you would write the letter with a pencil or pen.

Enjoy these tactile cards again and again throughout the fall, and look forward to make new ones in the spring!
