Getting Dressed

As parents of small children, we have all had times where we are in a hurry, and we rush to get our children dressed and out the door as quickly as possible.  However, at the preschool age, it is better if you allow time for your child to dress and undress herself.  This simple activity gives her practice in doing buttons, snaps, ties, and more.  All of which she should be able to do as she is heading off to kindergarten.

You can also have her practice by attaching old articles of clothing, such as shirts, jackets, and even toddler-sized pants to solid boards.  Be sure to close the buttons, snaps, etc. before fixing the garment in place so that the clothing will close again when you have finished.  You can also  attach shoelaces or an old hat that ties under the chin.  If you don’t have any worn, spare clothes hidden away, try checking out your local thrift store for a cheap alternative.

Once your boards are made, your child can practice the skills over and over without being rushed.  They can even be an item used as a compromise during those We’re-Running-Late times.  “Let me put on your jacket now, and you can practice your zippers in the car.”  Grab the boards, and you’re out the door!  Before long, she will be able to get dressed all on her own, and you will be zooming out the door with time to spare.
