Flight of the Bumblebee
Most adults are at least vaguely familiar with the song “Flight of the Bumblebee”. Children also enjoy this particular piece of music because it is so fast. It makes you want to get up and move, which is exactly what you want them to do.
Begin by letting your child listen to the song. (Don’t be surprised if your child immediately begins to wiggle in her chair!) When it is over, ask your child how the song makes her feel. Then, play the song again after you tell her to move however she feels like moving to the music. (Be sure to give her an open space free from clutter.) Ask her if she can think of any animal that might move well to this music. Tell her the title of the song, and ask if she thinks it is a good name, and why or why not she feels this way.
You can end the lesson here or extend it into an art activity. Use a large piece of paper or poster board and draw a small, simple picture of a bee anywhere on the paper. Give your child a crayon or marker and tell her to draw to the music however she thinks the bee would move. When she is done she will have drawn her own “Flight of the Bumblebee!”
