Fruit Salad Syllables

Little kids love to help get meals ready.  Whether it is setting the table or preparing the food, their excitement is at a level which we, as adults, wish we could muster for such a mundane task.  Why not use this enthusiasm to help teach your child a skill which they can use even when the meal is over?

Plan ahead and purchase a variety of fruits that can be put together for a fruit salad.  Try to choose fruits that have a different number of syllables in their names (ex. Apple, grape, banana, watermelon, cantaloupe, honeydew, blueberry, etc.)  Wash and cut the fruit into bite-size pieces so that they are ready to go directly into the serving dishes.

Have your child wash his hands, and then help him to get out the correct number of bowls, one for each person who will be at the table.  Then, show your child how to add fruit based on the number of syllables in the name.  For example, each dish would get three pieces of banana because there are three syllables in ba/na/na.  Have your child say each syllable as she adds each piece to the bowl.  Repeat with all of the bowls, and repeat with all of the fruits.

Be sure to give your child plenty of praise.  Let everyone know who prepared the salad, and thank her for a job well done!
