Sock Sort

Have you ever gotten to the end of a pile of laundry you are folding and still had a bunch of socks that needed to be sorted?  You must then go through the pile matching pairs of socks and putting them together.  Although this skill may seem mindless to you, your preschooler may enjoy this simple challenge.  The activity also provides your child the opportunity to practice his sorting skills all while helping you complete a household task that needs to be finished.

The next time you are folding laundry, set all of the socks aside for your child to sort.  You may even want to wait until all of your laundry is completed so that there are a lot of different colors and sizes.  Give your child different characteristics to use when sorting the socks.  For example, you may ask your child to make two piles of socks.  Make one pile for the kid socks and one pile for the adult socks.  From there you can ask your child to sort the kid socks into various colors depending on what is available.  Do the same for the adult socks.  You can end by having your child match the pairs.

This activity also works well by changing up the order of the categories and by skipping directly to the last step so that your child has a large pile of socks to sort into pairs.  Show your child how the task can be useful by ending with letting your child put the socks into the correct dresser drawers.
