Classic Children’s Stories

Most current stories have a very narrow range of words that are used to tell the story.  Often, the words in the story are only those which would commonly be heard in everyday conversations of today.  However, classic children’s stories contain many more challenging words that children, and even adults, do not typically use to communicate with others.

Classic children’s stories, such as “The Tale of Peter Rabbit”, “The Shoemaker and the Elves”, and “The Sleeping Beauty”, contain advanced words which are probably not already part of your child’s vocabulary.  Simply reading stories such as these exposes your child to more words.  Of course, stopping to explain unknown words is even better.

Sometimes, however, finding these stories can be a challenge in itself.  The web sites Light Up Your Brain and Speakaboos have decent lists of classic stories, and there is the option of having the story read aloud.  Public libraries are probably the best option, however, for finding hardcover copies of these books.
