Memory Games
Playing memory games is a great way to help your child actively develop a pre-reading skill. It may not seem obvious at first, but a good short-term memory is needed in order to read and comprehend what has just been read. There are any number of games you can play with your child that will help to develop this essential skill. Of course, there is the very popular game where you attempt to flip over matching pictures. However, there are also simple, home-made games you can play as well that solidify this same skill. Try the following with your preschooler.
Gather a few small objects and hide them under a baby blanket or other small piece of material. Have your child close her eyes while you arrange the game and then tell her to open them once the blanket is covering the objects. Tell her to try to remember what she sees, and then lift the blanket. Give her just a few seconds to memorize the objects. Replace the cover and ask her to tell you what she saw. Adjust the game based on her ability. Try adding more objects or you can shorten the amount of time she has to memorize what she has seen.
