Snicker-doodle
My family, including my mom and step-dad, recently returned from a much needed vacation to Orlando, Florida. While there, we visited Sea World, Walt Disney World and Gator Land. We were busy with activities from start to finish nearly each and every day. Since our days would be so packed, we wanted to take a planned, but flexible approach to our visits to these parks. The first day proved to be too much for my oldest son (and myself). I was constantly saying his name, reminding him to stay with the adults and to watch where he was going. (He loves to follow cracks in the cement, and he doesn’t seem to be conscious of anything or anyone else around him while intensely navigating these tracks.)
I knew my nerves couldn’t possibly take four more days of this incessant nagging. So I came up with a plan. Together, we came up with the word, “snicker-doodle” as our secret code word. I didn’t tell anyone buy my husband what this word meant. However, my son knew that “snicker-doodle” was his reminder to pay attention and watch where he was going. Instead of feeling my blood boil, we actually giggled as he recognized our secret code. I was amazed at how well one silly word could change his behavior and my mood. It is definitely a strategy I will utilize in the future.
