Fire Safety
On recent occasions, our neighbors may have been pondering the strength of the sanity of our family. I am sure it must have looked quite odd to see children and adults alike emerging from their home on their hands and knees. Then, once outside the home, family members darted across the lawn in their bare feet and stopped at the corner where we all turned and watched the house.
What was the reason for this madness? Why weren’t we wearing any shoes? And what was so interesting with the house that we all stared in total amazement?
Actually, nothing was happening at all. We were simply practicing our fire drill. My children learned how to recognize a fire alarm, feel a door with the back of their hand in order to determine if it was safe to exit, crawl under smoke, place a blanket at the bottom of the door if they cannot get out, and signal a firefighter at a window (and to never hide). If able to exit the house, they learned where to meet the rest of the family, not to return to the house, and to go to a neighbor’s to dial 911.
We teach our children to practice riding a bike, writing their names, and brushing their teeth. Don’t forget to practice fire drills too. It could save their lives. Besides, its fun and makes the neighbors look at you funny.
