Nature Walk Bracelets

A couple of weeks ago, my two young boys and I went to a local park to join in the Celebration of the Young Child.  The event is held annually in order to help families learn about local organizations that are available to meet the needs of young children.  Even if you aren’t looking for any special good or service, there is plenty to do to keep children excited for several hours.

Each vendor must provide some type of craft or activity that children are able to complete at their booth.  It can be anything from making a paper mask to completing a physical obstacle course.  Children leave with a bag full of goodies and homemade creations, along with giant smiles from having had so much fun.

This year my favorite craft was a very simple and inexpensive activity.  Simply take a piece of duct tape and attach it inside out on your child’s wrist.  Be sure to make a bracelet for yourself as well.  Then, take a walk in a field, the woods, or anywhere you could collect nature items.

As you see small flowers, leaves, seeds and other lightweight items, attach them to your bracelet to create a souvenir.  The craft can also be used to discuss your nature walk once it is completed.  Talk about the items on the bracelets and where they were found.  Discuss favorite items and why they are liked so much.

I enjoyed the activity so much that my bracelet is still around the gear shift in my car.  It is a small reminder of how sometimes, the simplest crafts can be the most fun and educational.
