Sid the Science Kid

There is a show on PBS that both of my boys really enjoy watching.  “Sid the Science Kid” is a preschool and early elementary targeted television show that attempts to make an array of science topics simple enough for young learners to understand.  Children seem to love the computer generated animation, and the subject matter allows me to feel comfortable letting my children watch television because I know they are learning.

The show usually begins with Sid, a preschool-aged child, formulating a question about an experience he has had at home.  He then travels to his school where is teacher, Miss Susie, helps Sid and his classmates investigate the problem.

The show introduces a wide range of topics including weather, basic anatomy and growth, life skills, change, oceans, animals, and many more.  On the web site http://pbskids.org/sid/ you can explore the series or allow your child to investigate further with games, printable activities, and mini science investigation.  The web site has an area to find out when the show airs on your local public television station, and includes a listing of episode titles.

I have found that the show gives enough information to cover the topic but also asks enough questions to get kids thinking beyond what is covered in a program.  My children often want to conduct their own science experiments after watching the show.
