Book Review: The Velveteen Rabbit
I have attended informal baby showers where everyone bring their favorite book to give to the new mother. I have also seen books be used instead of cards at baby showers, and I even attended a book shower for a mentor mom who was becoming a grandmother for the first time. In each case, I immediately thought of my favorite book, The Velveteen Rabbit.
The story, of course, is a classic and can be cherished by generation after generation. However, I am very deliberate in the particular Velveteen Rabbit book which I give to others. Although I typically like the cartoon-like drawings I have seen in numerous versions of the story, I definitely prefer the gorgeous life-like pictures completed by illustrator Donna Green. The story is still the original as told by Margery Williams, but the illustrations give a whole new life to the tale.
Marjory William’s story was originally released in 1922. With the help of Donna Green’s illustrations, adults can, “enter the world of children, to experience the story as they do” (Green), and perhaps, reveal memories of the story being read to them when they were a child.
