Preschool Computer and Internet Safety | The Preschooler

Kids on the Web

Although your little one is probably not ready to start typing away on the computer, the time in which this will happen will probably arrive sooner than you think.  When it does, you want to be prepared to guide your child so that she is not left wandering somewhere out there on her own in cyberspace.  One way to begin this process is to provide your child with a search engine just for kids.

But how do you know a search engine is safe?  Searchenginewatch.com has put together a list of sites which are either designed specifically with kids in mind or have parental filters that do not allow adult information, including language, violence, and sexual information, to be accessed by the child.  A few of the links also take you to another set of links to web sites that have been approved as child safe.

Although these sites have been tested an approved, be sure to try out the search engines and take a look at some of the site links before allowing your child to surf away.  Continue to conduct regular spot checks so that you know the filters are still working properly, and new sites are truly safe for your child.  Also, teach your child about internet safety.  (You can find a guide at KidsHealth.org.)
