Before the First Day of School
If your child will be heading off to kindergarten this year, you may be a little anxious about the transition. Your child is probably nervous about this new adventure as well. However, there are a few things you can do to help your child get ready for the first day of school.
Most schools have some sort of orientation program for kindergarten students. They may be able to meet their teachers, see their classrooms and the rest of the school, and maybe even sit on a school bus. Here are a few things you can try at home in addition to the orientation:
- Once you have received a list from the school, let your child help buy the supplies requested. New stuff is always exciting!
- Sleep is very important, don’t wait until the day before school to introduce a new bedtime. Instead, a week or two before, begin to slowly move the bedtime back until the desired time is reached.
- Prepare picture checklists to help your child see what needs to be done the night before and the morning of school. This will give your child a sense of control as well as a set of responsibilities.
- If possible, set up a few play dates with other children who will be in your child’s class. Having a buddy will make your child feel as though she is not alone.
- If your child has never ridden on a bus, take a short trip on a city bus to get your child used to bench seats and no seat belts.
Hopefully these preparations will qualm your worries as well as your child’s.
