Book Review: Little Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly

I can remember singing the little tune about the “Little Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly”.  It was a very catchy tune and, as she swallowed more and more items, it became increasingly difficult, as well as a fun challenge, to try and say all of the items before running out of breath.  It became a bit of a game in my elementary school classroom  to have everyone sing the song together and see who could say everything.

Although my own children are too young to have mastered the song, they have fallen in love with the story.  They love to hear their father or I struggle to say it really fast in one breath or in a silly way that makes the story even more hilarious.

We own several versions of this classic story, and they enjoy them all the same.  However, they have recently become infatuated with the new renditions with a spin on the original where the old lady swallows something other than a fly, and the story then develops in such a way where all of the items she swallows turn into something else.  For example, in the story, “The Little Old Lady Who Swallowed Some Leaves”, all of the swallowed pieces turn into a scarecrow when the lady sneezes them out.  These new stories, by Lucille Colandro, include the Little Old Lady swallowing a bat, a turkey, and some snow, among others.
