Zoo Syllables

There are few different ways to introduce the concept of syllables to young children.  On this site, we have previously discussed clapping your hands and using musical instruments, along with several other ideas.  Once your child has a few methods in her repertoire, she will need practice using those techniques.  Here is one way to do just that using zoo animals as the theme.

Begin by collecting pictures of as many zoo animals as you can gather.  (You can also use those little plastic molded animals instead.)  Make a graph on a large sheet of paper or use yarn and plastic numbers, such as the little magnetic ones,  to make a graph on the floor.  The graph will need columns for the numbers one, two, and three.

To play, have your child say the name of the animal, and then choose a method for identifying the number of syllables in that name.  For example, if the animal is a hyena, your child may clap out hy-e-na.  That animal or picture would then be placed under the column on the graph labeled with a “3″.  She would then continue with the rest of the animals.  (If you have an animal with more than three syllables, like “hippopotamus”, be sure to include sections of your graph for those animals.)

When all of the animals are on the graph, ask questions such as, “Which syllable number had the most animals in it?  Which had the least?, etc.”
