Feeling Letters
When I was student-teaching in a kindergarten classroom, there was an activity my classroom teacher suggested that the students really enjoyed that also helped them learn how to form their letters.
It was fall, so we used pumpkin seeds as our main material. We began by giving each child a piece of card stock which had the letter “P” on it. The letter was about six inches tall and written very neatly. The students were each given a pile of pumpkin seeds which they then carefully glued over the written letter.
Once the seeds had dried, we instructed the children on how to correctly trace over the letter. With the letter “P”, you make the tall straight line, starting at the top. You then go back to the top and trace the curved line. We also instructed the students to say the “pumpkin” while they were tracing so that they identified the beginning sound of the word with the letter being formed. The students then repeated this process several times.
The activity helped the children learn their letters and how to form them at the same time. They also got to hear the sound the letter makes and then use their own voice to repeat the sound. They were able to use their sense of touch along with sight for added emphasis.
This same activity was repeated for many of the letters in the alphabet. Although we did not complete this for all of the letters, you could certainly do so in order to make a book.
