The Making of Music
Yesterday, my three-year-old, Elliot, and I dropped in at a new coffee shop and bakery. It was a quaint little place with a very Bohemian atmosphere. As we were eying up all of the delicious pastries laid out before us, a musician was setting up his equipment in a small space to the side.
Elliot immediately began inquisitively gazing at the man and his guitar. The fellow did not seem to mind and shortly spoke up saying that he found it interesting how little kids were always deeply intrigued whenever he got out his instrument. He hypothesized that this is because young children have typically never experienced the making of music. Instead, they have likely only heard it through a CD player, on the radio, or through some other listening-only device.
This man’s statements are probably true. Although I try to give my children as many real-life experiences as possible, I quickly realized I had never taken them to a concert of any kind. Both of my boys love classical music so taking them to see an orchestra would be the ideal connection between the music they enjoy and how it is made. With the holiday season just a few weeks away, keep your eyes peeled for kid-friendly opportunities for your child to experience music in the making.
