Digraphs and Blends
When my older son was just beginning to read, I quickly noticed that he was able to sound out short words where each letter in the word had one sound. He ran into difficulty when there were two letters together that made one sound. These combinations, such as “sh”, ”ch”, and “th” are called digraphs. There are also other common blends, such as “cl”, “bl”, and “cr”, where the two letters have their own sound but are frequently “blended” together in words.
You can make a matching game for your child that she can use to practice identifying these digraphs and blends. (This game is best suited for children who are already able to identify letters and their corresponding sounds.)
Using a list of digraphs and blends (such as the ones included at these digraph and blend web sites), along with pictures or clip art, make pairs of cards that can be placed side-by-side to match each digraph and blend with a picture of a word that starts with that letter combination. For example, “cl” on one card would be paired with a picture of a “clock” on another card.
*You may also find worksheets online like the ones found at http://bogglesworldesl.com/consonantblendcards.htm to simply cut out the pictures and words and then paste them on separate cards for children to match.
