Read, Read, Read
Most children love to listen to stories, especially when they are read by a loved one. In our family, my husband is the expert storyteller. Our boys get ecstatic when their father is being silly and changing words in a story they know well in order to make them correct his absurd errors. David also engages the boys by reading with wonderful expression. He can truly make a book come alive.
Although I tend to be more precise in my reading of books, my boys are always happy to cuddle on my lap and read story upon story, if time allows.
Both styles are correct. Fortunately, there is no one right way to read a story. You can be silly and animated or you can stick to the script. Either way, children are learning wonderful reading skills that they will carry with them for years to come.
Through storytelling, children learn how to hold the book, follow text, use the pictures as clues, make predictions, and even make the connection between the written and spoken words. All of these skills need to be in place before children begin to read on their own. So read to your child as often as possible and encourage other adults in your child’s life to do the same.
