Map Skills at the Mall
The holiday shopping season will soon be upon us. This year, instead of roaming aimlessly with your child through the local shopping malls while your child begs to return home, make a game and teach a lesson all while efficiently completing your holiday shopping.
Before going to the mall, check online to see if the mall has a map available for printing out at home. If it does, print one and have your child plan a route for your shopping. (If no map is available online, go to the mall ahead of time and use graph paper to sketch the map on your own.) Highlight the stores you want to visit and help your child decide the best way to get to those stores without having to criss-cross back and forth across the mall. Be sure to include a compass rose (oriented correctly) on your map.
Now that you have a plan of attack, go to the mall and put it into action. One by one, visit the stores you have chosen using your predetermine route. Ask your child questions about the direction you must procede using the compass rose as a guide. Since these words and concepts may be new to him, show him several times, and do not expect perfection. This is just a practice activity to get him used to the ideas and terms he will hear again and again during his school career.
