Something is Wrong
Have you ever tried to think of the words to a song and realized that something is wrong? Some word or phrase just doesn’t sound right. (If you are like me, this would irritate you to know end, and you would either go find the song to listen to or you would search for the lyrics on the web.) Trish Kuffner, author of The Preschooler’s Busy Book, has come up with a cute activity where you purposefully insert incorrect words into a rhyme or song in order to focus your child on listening carefully to what you say.
You don’t need any special materials for this game, and it is a great one to play in the car or anywhere you need to entertain your child spur of the moment. Simply begin by singing a song that is familiar to your child and, instead of singing it correctly, change one word in the lyrics. When your child hears the incorrect word, he says, “Beep!”
Start the game by changing an obvious word at the end of a rhyme. For example, “Little Bo Peep has lost her goats.” Once your child catches on to the rules of the game, try more difficult versions where you change a word in the middle of the lyrics, such as, “Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall. Humpty Dumpty had a great fall. All the king’s horses and all the king’s dogs, couldn’t put Humpty together again.
