Drawing in the Dark
You don’t have to wait until nighttime and turn out the lights for this activity. Simply find a piece of material to use as a blindfold. Give your child a few crayons and a piece paper. Have her sit safely in a chair, and then place the blindfold on her eyes. Now have her draw. She doesn’t have to draw any particular picture, and scribbling is fine. The idea is to simply give her the sensation of using her sense of touch to concentrate rather than her sense of sight. (If your child is hesitant to wear the blindfold, try completing the activity yourself to show her that it is not scary. It is just new and awkward.)
When she has finished, work together to find shapes within her drawing. These can be typical shapes such as a triangle or square or they can be shapes that represent pictures, as though you were looking into the clouds.
Repeat the activity, but this time have her try to draw a simple picture. One suggestion would be to have her try draw her family.
After her drawing is complete, have her remove her blindfold to see her masterpiece. Laugh together about the out of place pieces, and talk about how difficult it can be to draw in this way.
