Wind Painting

“Air” can be a very difficult concept for children to grasp.  You can’t see it, and even when you can feel it children may still have a hard time understanding what it is that is blowing against their face.  In my experience, I have found the best way to help little ones learn about the air and wind is to give them experiences that let them see its effects.

On a windy day, for example, go outside with a couple of crepe paper streamers.  Instruct your child to stand still, hold a streamer in each hand with arms outstretched.  Watch as the streamers rise and fall as the wind waxes and wanes.

Another activity you can do inside is to create paintings formed by your own wind.  Begin by covering the work surface for protection.  Use a paper plate as the painting surface, and add a few small puddles of paint in different colors a couple of inches apart.

Let your child use a straw to blow the paint across the plate.  Show your child how to turn the plate so that the paint is being blown in all directions.  (Note: If the paint is not spreading easily, try adding a few drops of water to the paint in a separate container before spooning it onto the plate.)

When the paintings are dry, punch a hole in the top and string a piece of yarn through the hole.  Tightly knot the string around an object outdoors and watch the wind blow the paintings too!
