Can I Play?
My three-year-old has an imagination that goes non-stop. When his older brother isn’t home, and he is able to spend some time playing on his own, I love to listen to him taking control of the imaginary situation and playing all of the roles in whatever scene he has scripted in his mind. It is amazing to listen to him change his voice and play several different characters in the scene.
Although I usually let him carry out his fun on his own, I will occasionally ask if I can join in. I don’t make any of the rules, and I allow my son to assign me my role. Usually I am permitted to make up my script on the fly, which gives me a chance to incorporate some language skills. However, if he insists on dictating what will be said by each character, I follow his instructions as best as possible.
Try joining in the fun with your own child. If you can, observe for awhile, and then ask for permission to play too. Remember that this is your child’s game and you should try to follow her rules. If you are able to weave in some correct grammar or dialogue that is great, but remember that it is more important to enjoy the land of make believe with your child.
