Think Outside, Inside, and All Over the Box
I have often heard people joking about how toys today are so complicated and fancy, and how things used to be so much different when they were younger. Although I would have to agree that technology has changed the array of toys that are available to our youngsters, their imaginations are still intact.
Therefore, it is up to us parents to provide them with simple, non-electronic options for creative outlets. We must think outside the box. And in the activity I am about describe, you may want to think inside and all over the box as well.
Do you remember playing with empty boxes when you were a child? I can recall climbing inside and making my own little club house. My dad would cut out a window that I would use to peek out and see what the rest of my family was doing. My own children have gotten more sophisticated and have asked for sky-lights on their own box creations.
Beyond cutting holes, help your children think creatively by identifying things in and around your own home that they may want to include in their miniature versions. Perhaps a mailbox or a doorbell would be enjoyed. You could even put two boxes side-by-side and use one as a garage.
The ideas are limited only by imagination.
