“W” is for Window
The next time you are searching for an activity you can use to teach or reinforce letter sounds, try this one out with your youngster.
Gather a set of letters, one for each letter of the alphabet, and place them in a bag or pillowcase. (You can use magnetic letters, those included with a board game, or letters written on strips of paper.) Then have your child draw one out of the bag. If needed, help your child identify the sound that letter makes, and then find an object in your home that begins with that letter. For example, if your child pulled out the letter “w”, he may indicate that “window” starts with the letter “w”.
If you do not have a toy xylophone, a zebra figurine, or a yo-yo, you may want to give your child a few “passes” to use when he pulls out a particularly difficult letter sound. Another option is to find a clipart picture for letters such as “q”, “x”, “y”, and “z” that you have laid out in an obvious spot for your child to find such as the kitchen table or living room floor.
