Baskets of Syllables

Breaking words into parts in a major part of learning to decode words once a child is beginning to read.  One part of doing that is identifying syllables.  Try this game with your child to help him practice identifying the number of syllables in a word.

Gather items from around the house that represent different numbers of syllables (or print off pictures instead).  Be sure the items can fit into three baskets that you will use for the activity.  Label each basket with a one, two, or three.

Next, put all of the items into one large bowl or basket.  Help your child say the name of each item and then place the items into the basket marked with the correct number of syllables.  If your child is having a difficult time identifying the syllables try using one of the other strategies listed on this site for review, such as clapping or stomping out the words.

If your child goes through all of the items you have gathered, challenge your child to find an item of their own from around the house that goes into a basket that you point to.  Play the game as long as your child is interested.
