Letters from Head to Toe

When we think about teaching children to write their letters, we generally jump to visualizations of a youngster sitting at a desk or table with a pencil and a piece of three-lined paper.  The child is sitting with feet flat on the floor and, of course, perfect posture.  However, this picture in our minds is often not how a child would prefer to practice letter formation.

At this age, learning should be more about learning through play than a paper-and-pencil rigid routine.  That is why preschool children and adults alike will love to practice writing their letters with their toes.  Young children often get frustrated  when trying to write with a thin writing implement.  Fine motor skills are not fully developed, and more time may be spent concentrating on how to physically hold the pencil instead of how to write the letters.  Using their toes takes the focus off of the lack of dexterity and places it, instead, on the purpose of the lesson which is how the letters are formed.

Although a nice sunny day in the sand is the ideal location for this activity, children can also practice writing with their toes on thick carpeting or even with finger-paints.  Get creative and have fun!  Join in with your child.  Laugh, giggle, and teach your child letters all at the same time!
