Dropper Painting

Last week, I was feeling very “Martha-Stewarty”, and I decided to hand-craft some table place-holders for use at our Easter dinner.  (Actually, I found the craft instructions in a parenting magazine, and it was intended for completion with your children.  This is my maximum level of craftiness.)

The first step of the craft involved painting coffee filters by dipping them in egg dye.  Since I did not wish to stain every available item in my home, I decided to use liquid watercolor paint instead.  And, having done the “dipping” method before, I altered the instructions in order to provide a cleaner approach.  It just so happens that the “dropper” method to which I switched is also great for improving fine motor skills.

To do dropper painting with your own child, you will need some watery paint, either liquid watercolors or poster/tempera paint that has been watered down, and a dropper.  You can use an old medicine dropper that has been thoroughly cleaned or you can purchase them at various craft and hardware stores.  Coffee filters work great as a the paper for this activity.

Explain to your child how to squeeze the bulb, place the tip of the dropper in the paint, and then let go of the bulb.  Next, show him how to carefully squeeze one drop at a time onto the coffee filter. This takes some practice.  Watch the colors spread and blend.  When the painting is dry, hang the beautiful filter in a window as a sun-catcher.
