Popsicle Stick Puzzle
While visiting the Dinosaur State Park in Connecticut, my children had the opportunity to take part in a short craft with one of the volunteers. The puzzle was very simple and easy to recreate, yet my kids loved it and had fun playing with it afterwards.
To help your child make a puzzle of his own, you will need a stencil and enough Popsicle craft sticks the cover the stencil in a single layer. (Try to use a stencil that does not require more than ten to twelve sticks or the puzzle may be too difficult for your preschooler to put back together.)
Lay the craft sticks side-by-side on a flat surface, and tape them together using a long piece of tape run across the middle of the puzzle. Flip the sticks over, and place the stencil over the sticks. Help your child hold the stencil in place, and let your child use washable markers to trace the stencil and color it in. (Be sure not to write anything on the back of the puzzle or it will be confusing when trying to put it back together.)
You can now remove the tape. The sticks will come apart, and you can mix them up. Viola! A puzzle. Let your child put the puzzle back together by rearranging the sticks to form the picture she just drew.
