Give a Boy a Marker

While on an eight-hour drive back home from Connecticut, my oldest child was entertained for hours (literally “four” hours) with nothing but a laminated card, a dry-erase marker, and the scenery around him.  He was playing a game where he was supposed to find as many red trucks, yellow cars, horses, tractors, air planes, and motorcycles as he could.  Each time he spotted one of these objects, he would keep track on the card.

At one point, I turned around and began laughing obnoxiously at the sight of my son and the trail marks left by the writing implement in his hand.  My son does not sit still…ever.  So all the while he was gazing out the window, his right hand containing the dry-erase, but semi-permanent, marker had been floating freely across his pants, shirt, face, neck, and even behind his ears.

I tried to describe the sight to my husband, but it was something you truly had to see.  However, the illustration created in my husband’s mind gave him and idea.  “Some day I should write a book called, Give a Boy a Marker.”  I told him the title reminded me of the Laura Numeroff series of books including, If You Give a Mouse a Cookie

The difference, however, is that in Numeroff’s stories, the mouse at least make logical connections from one frame to the next.  Given that my husband’s book would be about a child, it would not necessarily contain sensible connections from one event to the next.  It would simply attempt to follow the wanderings of a little boy’s mind.  Personally, I think it is an impossible task, even though it would be wonderfully entertaining.
