Pin the Letter on the Sound

When you say, “The word ‘dog’ begins with the letter ‘d’”, a preschool child must be able to picture the letter “d” in his head while thinking of the sound it makes.  However, in this game, you can help your child identify beginning letter sounds while physically holding onto the letter.

Making the game is very simple.  All you need is twenty-six clothespins (or fifty-two if you want to make a separate set for upper- and lower-case letters) and a pen.  Write one letter of the alphabet on each of the clothespins.  You are now ready to play the game with your child.

Put all of the clothespins in a bag or basket.  Instruct your child to pull one out of the container.  Now your child must find an object in your home that begins with that letter.  Once she has located that object, with as little help from you as possible, she clips the pin to the object (or places it on top, beside, etc. if it cannot be clipped to it).

Once all of the clothespins are gone, be sure to give big congratulations, and then race to see who can collect the most clothespins and put them back in the container.
