Building Vocabulary with “Sid the Science Kid”

My own two children are starting to outgrow one of my favorite preschool television shows.  It airs on the public broadcasting station and is a wonderful program for introducing numerous science concepts.  One of the best learning features of the show is the use of correct science terms.

Each show begins with the main character, Sid, exploring his world.  He will then discover something new about which he is now curious.  This curiosity leads to a science experiment or further exploration.  Throughout the episodes, Sid and his friends at his preschool, along with their teacher, use the correct vocabulary to carry out their experiment.  They begin with their hypothesis and implement the strategies they have devised for learning about the topic at hand.  They often use various pieces of science tools and equipment, and even display their findings on charts and graphs.

I am always impressed with the content and especially the vocabulary that this show introduces to young children.  I actually make a point of trying to find ways to weave this program into my older son’s  home-school curriculum.  We are able to instantly watch many of the programs using a popular internet rental program.  However, if you don’t have access to such a service, check out your local library.  We are able to find several seasons of episodes there, as well.
