Book Review: Art and Max

I like to dabble in paints.  I can paint a little bit of scenery with watercolors or acrylics, but I have never felt any of my work is good enough to show off.  I have never had any formal training so perhaps I feel a bit intimidated by “professional” artists.  Apparently, the lesson I need to take, is one offered by Max in David Wiesner’s most recent book.

Art and Max, written and illustrated by Wiesner, is a wonderful tale told with very few words.  Beautiful illustrations depict the story of young Max in an early experience with art.  Max is not concerned with the fact that Art, a detail-oriented, serious artist, is attempting to complete his latest masterpiece.  Instead, Max jumps in and uses his own creativity to create havoc and mischief.  His unbridled spirit, however, gives the story a happy and surprising conclusion.

Personally, I ordered several copies of this book because I immediately fell in love with Max, and his go-for-it attitude.  I am planning on giving these away as gifts wrapped with a basic set of watercolors, and maybe some watercolor paper.  Together, I am hoping they will be enough to inspire anyone, young or old, to take a chance and create a masterpiece of their own.
